A Sad Loss

Metzi’s Calf Did Not Survive the Birth

We regret to inform our valued guests and the wider community of animal lovers that Metzi has given birth to her first calf. Sadly, the calf did not survive the birth.

Metzi’s preparation for giving birth, as well as the integration of the recently arrived pregnant cow into the established herd, initially progressed well. The presence and behaviour of the highly experienced Kwanza, who had previously helped raise three calves, together with those of her daughter, Kimani, indicated that the group was adapting appropriately to the new situation. Despite this, the herd’s support during the critical period surrounding the birth was unfortunately not sufficient to ensure the calf’s survival.

We are currently investigating the exact cause of the calf’s death. Determining the underlying causes of such an event is a complex process, and we will therefore carry out the necessary veterinary examinations and professional assessments in the coming period in order to gain as precise an understanding as possible of what happened.

Over the next few days, our primary aim is to provide calm, undisturbed conditions for both the animals and their keepers. An event of this nature is challenging for animals and caregivers alike, which is why maintaining a calm environment and the animals’ familiar daily routine is particularly important to us at this time.

Following this period, the cows will once again be kept together with the bull, Jambo. We hope that, despite the difficulty of this experience, it will contribute to the continued development of the herd and, in the future, support successful breeding outcomes—something that has brought us and our visitors much joy on many occasions over the past years.

We thank our guests for their understanding and for respecting the peace and privacy of the animals and their keepers during this time.
