Common hill myna chick hatched in our Zoo's India House.
One of the world's best mimic birds is easily recognizable by its black feathers and yellow bare skin appendages.
There are several subspecies of this species, which are native to Asia, and our zoo exhibits the very rare Gracula religiosa religiosa, of which there are 23 in European zoos.
After identifying the subspecies, the species coordinator placed an egg from Neuwied Zoo with our pure male last year and this year the first chick of the breeding pair has hatched. The animals have been living together for 1 year and are very good parents, they both did their part in hatching the eggs and now they are feeding their chick together, which has hatched after 1 month in the burrow and is now available for visitors to see in the India House.
Beacons are one of the best vocal imitators of birds, using a variety of calls to attract attention, so it's worth lingering long in front of their flight.
