Hello Metzi

Our African elephant herd has a new member

Our African elephant herd has a new member!
As part of the European Endangered Species Program (EEP), our zoo's African elephant family has been enriched with a new female: Metzi arrived from BIOPARC Valencia in Spain and can now be seen in the enclosure.
Metzi's transport and integration are the result of true international cooperation.
Prior to the transport, our colleagues traveled to the Spanish zoo to get to know the future new member of the herd and accompanied her on her journey together with their Spanish colleagues.  During the two-and-a-half-day trip, Metzi tolerated the transport well, with experts constantly monitoring her condition and behavior.
After her arrival, we began the process of introducing her to the other members of the elephant herd, following the principle of gradual integration.
First, she met Jambo, the bull, with whom she had previously lived for 16 years in Valencia, so the reunion was familiar and reassuring for both of them. She then met Metzi Kimani and her mother, Kwanza, the two females, and the new cow immediately fit into the group.
