The Nyíregyháza Zoo is located 5 km from the city in the Sóstó resort area, where a beach, a village museum and a park forest offer relaxation to visitors. The Zoo is located in this natural, almost undisturbed environment deep in an oak forest. The 30-hectare area welcomes visitors from all over the world so they can travel around the Earth and observe how animals live in different parts of the world.
The Nyíregyháza Zoo, which won the title of Europe's best zoo in 2015, 2018 and 2020, has an extremely special animal collection. It is no coincidence that nearly 500,000 guests arrive at Hungary's most visited rural tourist attraction every year, not only from all over the country, but also from beyond our borders.
The park is also called the zoo of the animals, as it exudes a special atmosphere that is incomparable to anything else, which is almost impossible to imagine, and is worth experiencing in person.
In the 30-hectare oak forest, the 5,000 animals living here can be seen in close-to-natural social enclosures, grouped by continent.
For guests, a day, or for many, 2-3 days, spent at the Nyíregyháza Zoo is a real trip around the world.
The zoo's primary task is to show visitors how rich and diverse the animal world is. For many animals, the zoo is the last refuge, where, as part of an international collaboration, they try to save and reproduce animal species that are on the verge of extinction.
From a nature conservation perspective, the park is of great importance, as endangered species have the opportunity to develop and reproduce in peaceful conditions.
As a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), Nyíregyháza Zoo participates in more than 100 species rescue and breeding programs; among others, the African elephant, the Bali starling, which is on the verge of extinction, the Indian rhinoceros or the Siberian tiger are successfully breeding. The coordinator of the European studbook program for the red giant kangaroo, the largest marsupial on Earth, is from Nyíregyháza.
In addition to rare and endangered species, the park considers educational and nurturing work as an important task. With its collection, the garden offers an unparalleled opportunity for those who want to learn, as it presents not only the Hungarian fauna, but also the fauna of all continents, thus creating a diversity of optional topics.
Educational institutions can also choose from a number of programs; 400 children took a peek behind the scenes at the summer zoo school camp, while special activities await the disabled.
In addition to the special programs - such as the seal show or parrot presentation - the greatest interest is the lemur forest, where the braver guests can walk among the prosimians.
After the long walk, you will surely enjoy choosing from the park's famously delicious menus at the Bamboo Restaurant or the Jungle Restaurant.
The experience is completed by the park's 3 zoo hotels, the two-star Hotel Jungle, the three-star Ozoon Hotel and the four-star Hotel Pangea - the dinosaur hotel -, which offers unique relaxation to those guests who like to be among animals, walk in the zoo until dawn, hear the squawking of peacocks, the love song of gibbons or the unique barking sound of seals.
