Slender-tailed meerkats live in large colonies in arid, poorly vegetated regions of Africa. Slender-tailed meerkats feed diurnally, and since on the ground surface they are quite defenseless, some of them are keeping guard – raising to their hind legs and reclining on their tails – while the others are foraging.
