Humboldt penguin

Like other penguin species, this species lives near the sea and only comes ashore to nest. It is native to the coasts of Chile and Peru. Its name refers to the Humboldt Current, located near its habitat, which was named after the explorer Alexander von Humboldt. Its diet consists of fish, including anchovies, sardines, mackerel, crabs, and squid. It dives to depths of 60 meters while hunting, though dives as deep as 150 meters have been documented. During the breeding season, adult foragers do not stray more than 40 kilometers from the colony, but in winter they may leave the colony for distances of up to several hundred kilometers.
